Emmas Carbon Literacy Course is like learning by osmosis!

We all know the planet needs our help and that we need to be taking urgent action. As individuals, trying to create meaningful change for the planet can feel an endless battle, but as educators we have an amazing opportunity to use the most powerful change making tool there is, knowledge!

As educators, gaining and sharing new knowledge is an AWESOME opportunity to create change. By becoming literate ourselves and then educating our learners to think for themselves and take action we can create a powerful impact for the benefit of the planet.

Our Carbon Literacy Course is perfect for educating or communicating climate change with your learners or other stakeholders.

With the use of our specifically designed carbon footprint games we will help you develop your knowledge of climate change and carbon emission impacts, ensuring you are confident in discussing climate change and its impacts.

From our facilitators, you will gain insight into valuable tools and resources you can use to up-skill your learners quickly. Engaging and mobilising them to talk about climate change through recognising their personal impact on the planet.

Our Carbon Footprint Games enable climate change to be taught in an interactive and accessible way and throughout the course we also show you how to use the games to facilitate conversations and learning for others.

In the Carbon Literacy for Educators course, you will cover:

DR EMMA FIELDHOUSE

Emma has 20+ years of experience in teaching, learning and sustainability. She’s a career environmentalist and fledgling entrepreneur having won a Woman in Innovation award in 2021 to fund the development of the Carbon Footprint Games into a digital version. She knows a good learning tool when she sees one and was swept away with business partner Anja Fischenich’s Carbon Footprint Game concept when they first met at London South Bank University in 2014. Her specialism is working with the Higher Education sector but Emma has worked across public, private, voluntary and education sectors including playing the game in schools. She’s run her own successful business since 2014. Emma has played the carbon footprint games with thousands of players, ranging from 5-year-old children to Geography professors and even sceptical grandparents. Everyone walks away having learnt something new or different about the climate or carbon impacts and many develop a new critical thinking ability to see below the products we consume to the impacts lurking just beneath. Emma’s mission is to bring this learning to as many people on the planet as possible and the new digital version aims to be that vehicle.

Research has shown that children can recall far better details of games they have played than most formal learning they receive. Using games as a way of learning works very effectively as they engage players in multiple different ways simultaneously.

As Kolb (1984) outlined in his theory of experiential learning, we all learn in multiple different ways (active learning, planning, theorising, reflection) and games are very good at engaging multiple learning capacities simultaneously. Marketeers know that we love receiving prizes, recognition, badges and rewards for doing (or not doing!) stuff. This trend for gamification has taken off and is now all around us!

The only way our game is different is that it’s a game NOT JUST gamified learning. By building on societies love of games, we aim to create even more intrinsic motivation for people to engage with the game than just the extrinsic motivation to collect rewards.

No. The Carbon Literacy course must be delivered over 8 hours before you can be certified as Carbon Literate.

Our Carbon Academy focuses on teaching you specifically how to use your new games and play in a way that should be most impactful with your stakeholders or learners as well as giving you a bit of background on the climate science.

The Carbon Literacy course, will use the carbon footprint games as part of your learning and will give you an overview of how playing the game is an effective way of delivering carbon literacy. The Carbon Literacy courses are longer pieces of learning – you also get the background on climate science delivered through a group exercise, as well as giving you space to reflect on your own climate action plans. Find out more about the Carbon Literacy courses here.
